Our Complete Guide to Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar With Mother

I’m sure by now you’ve heard and seen lots of pictures, articles and videos touting the curative and life-changing properties of Apple Cider Vinegar or “ACV”, and with good reason, we at Maitrihealth absolutely love ACV!

ACV has been used for over 2000 years and has been praised for having the ability to balance your pH, improve your digestion, support weight loss and balance your blood sugar levels, as well as many other things, which we will cover a little later.

However it’s important to note that not all ACV’s were made equal, let me explain;

An important ingredient in ACV is the “mother”, which is in unrefined, unpasteurized and unfiltered ACV. Mother is essentially a colony of beneficial bacteria which gives ACV some of its most important beneficial properties and also its cloudy appearance. So basically the cloudier your apple cider vinegar the better!

Maitrihealth’s recommendation is Bragg & Biona’s Organic ACV. We found that these are the most cloudy and yielded the best results with our patients.

So What’s So Great about ACV With Mother?

ACV is a great tonic for your liver and lymphatic system, it helps balance your body’s pH and stimulates bowel motility, optimising homeostatic function in your body. This is most likely due to the the abundance of antioxidants in ACV  which reduce oxidative damage caused by free radicals, improving both your blood and organ function.

We recommend the following ACV detox recipe to be taken once in the morning, and once in the evening before meals:

1 Teaspoon Lemon

1 Teaspoon Honey

1 Tablespoon ACV

1/2 A Glass Of Warm Water

There is plenty of research out there which supports the weight-loss  claims of ACV.

Studies suggest that one of the reasons why ACV is linked to weight-loss is because it may reduce sugar cravings and improve detoxification.

Another study in support of ACV and weight loss is from the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, they found that vinegar consumption with a high-carb meal resulted in participants eating/drinking 200 to 275 fewer calories throughout the rest of the day.

A study in Japan conducted a double-blind trial on obese adults, each with a similar body weight, waist measurement and body mass index (BMI), and split the subjects into three groups.

For 12 weeks, members of one group drank half an ounce (14ml) of ACV, one group had a beverage with 1 ounce (28ml) of ACV and the third group had a drink with no ACV. When the study was over, those who drank the cider vinegar had lower body weight, belly fat, waist measurements and lower triglycerides compared to those who did not.

We recommend the following weight-loss recipe  to be taken once in the morning, and once in the evening before meals:

¼ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

1 Teaspoon Honey (can be left out if vegan/diabetic, or substituted with agave nectar)

1 Tablespoon ACV

Stir into ½ Glass of Warm Water

If you’ve had/have problems such as colitis, ulcers or acid reflux (sometimes due to insufficient acid in your stomach), ACV has the potential to ease several kinds of stomach problems.

ACV was quoted as being the “ boon to digestive health” based on results taken from a study on mice with ulcerative colitis. The researchers found that when acetic acid (found in ACV) was added to their drinking water, they had higher levels of good bacteria in their guts, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, and reduced symptoms of the gastrointestinal disease.

We recommend the following digestion recipe to be taken once in the morning, and once in the evening before meals:

1 Teaspoon Ginger Powder

1 Teaspoon Honey (can be left out if vegan/diabetic, or substituted with agave nectar)

1 Teaspoon ACV

Stir in ½ Glass of water

ACV has been shown in studies to be effective in managing blood sugar levels and diabetes.

A recent study showed that  adults with pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and healthy people — after taking an ounce of ACV, all had lower blood glucose levels when they ate a high-carb meal consisting of a white bagel with butter and a glass of orange juice; again, compared with those who did not consume ACV.

Those with pre-diabetes improved their blood glucose levels by almost half, and the subjects with type 2 diabetes cut their blood glucose levels by 25 percent, showing improved insulin sensitivity and insulin responses.

We recommend the following recipe for blood sugar support to be taken once in the morning, and once in the evening before meals:

½ Teaspoon of Cinnamon Powder

½ Teaspoon of Turmeric

1 Tablespoon of ACV

Stir into 1/2 glass Of Warm Water
