Deep Tissue Massage
As you might expect, deep tissue massage has a lot in common with the more traditional style of massage. The main difference is that firm pressure and slow strokes are used to reach deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. For that reason, it’s a popular treatment for chronic aches and pains and is effective for soothing contracted areas in the neck, upper back, lower back, legs and shoulders.
The point of a deep tissue massage is to break up scar tissue and muscle “knots”. These bands of painful, rigid tissue can cause pain, tightness and limit your range of motion.
To start with, a deep tissue massage will consist of light pressure that acts as a warm up for stiff muscles. After that a range of techniques are used, including:
- Stripping – deep, gliding pressure along the length of the muscle fibres using the elbow, forearm, knuckles, and thumbs
- Friction – pressure applied across the grain of a muscle to release knots and realign tissue fibres
Deep tissue massage is ideal for people recovering from injury or suffering with chronic muscle pain. If you’d like to find out more or book a session, contact us today!
You’ve probably heard of Reiki before, but you might not be so sure of exactly what it entails. In simple terms, Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It’s also used to promote healing. It’s based on the notion that there is a type of “life force energy” flowing through us; this is what causes us to be alive. When that energy begins to lower or reduce, that’s when we are likely to get sick or feel the weight of anxiety. On the other hand, when it’s high, we are more likely to be happy and healthy.
Reiki is actually formed from two Japanese words – Rei which means ‘The Higher Power’ and Ki which means “life force energy”. So Reiki literally means “spiritually guided life force energy.”
The more we understand about Reiki the clearer it becomes a beneficial holistic health treatment. This is because it treats the person as a whole: body, emotions, mind and spirit, inducing relaxation, peace and tranquillity.
Reiki often combines light massage with elements of meditation. Contact us today to find out more and organise your first Reiki session.
We have regular Transcendental Meditation sessions at the Maitrihealth centre.
Transcendental Meditation is described as a simple, natural, effortless meditation technique that doesn’t involve contemplation or concentration. One uses a mantra as a vehicle to let the mind settle down naturally and, ultimately, to transcend thought.

The Transcendental Meditation process involves transcending thought itself, remaining aware without having an object of thought.

Reflexology is a personal and non-intrusive type of physical therapy that’s based on the theory that different parts of the feet, lower leg, hands, face and ears correspond with other areas of the body.
Reflexologists usually work holistically with patients, considering physical and non-physical factors that could be having an impact on your overall health and wellbeing. The aim is to restore your body’s natural balance.
Reflexology is an interesting and enlightening treatment. As the Association of Reflexologists says, “Some people find it works for them – some don’t. The best way to find out is to try it!”

Acupuncture isn’t as painful as it looks. In fact, it’s pretty much pain-free and many people actually use it to reduce chronic pain.
This traditional technique stems from ancient Chinese medicine. Although it might seem intimidating, it’s actually a holistic practice in which trained (and very careful!) practitioners stimulate specific points on the body by inserting thin needles into the skin.
Acupuncture originated in China over 2,500 years ago and has been developing ever since. It’s now used to treat certain diseases, pain and stress-related symptoms alongside other holistic health techniques.
